Honors graduate of the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki
Dr. Athina Gianopoulou was born in Xanthi, Greece in 1962 and grew up in Thessaloniki. She graduated with honors (valedictorian) from the Medical School of Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki in 1986. She immediately began her residency in General Surgery at Theagenio Anticancer Hospital in Thessaloniki. Three years later and after completing the mandatory year of Family Service in a remote area of Greece, she moved to the U.S.A. to pursue a career in Medicine, a dream she had since starting Medical school.
In 1990 she was admited to the Department of General Surgery at Duke University, under the chairmanship of Dr. Sabiston, and worked as research fellow at the melanoma laboratory. She took successfully the ECFMG and FLEX exams and was accepted as resident in General Surgery at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the oldest public university in the U.S.A.. In 1996, she continued her residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UNC with combined training in microsurgery at Duke and trauma and craniofacial surgery at CMC in Charlotte N.C.
She was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and started a fellow ship in Aesthetic Oculoplastic and Breast Surgery at Paces Plastic Surgery of Emory University in Atlanta. She was fortunate to work with and learn from innovators in the field and intermetionally recognized, plastic surgeons Dr. Rod Hester, Dr. Foad Nahai, Dr. Mc Cord and Dr. Codner.
She returned to Durham N.C. and started her own aesthetic practice. She lived and worked in Durham N.C. for 9 years, having a very successful practice and being recognized as one of the most competent surgeons in the area.
She returned to Greece in 2009 and began her practice in Thessaloniki keeping her office in the U.S.A. part time. In her beautiful new office, which expresses her attitude and philosophy in plastic surgery, she is currently seeing patients from all over Greece and overseas. She operates at St. Loukas hospital in Thessaloniki enjoying every day being finally back home...
Dr. "G" as they addressed her in the U.S.A. for 20 years, has a son 18 years old and in her free time enjoys cooking, reading, yoga, running and dancing.
